"Get Clean for Gene" - The Story of a CIA Stalking Horse

"Get Clean for Gene" - The Story of a CIA Stalking Horse

Robert F. Kennedy promised his mother he would never run for President.

In October on 1967, full engagement of the United States Military was more than three years old and the draft was in full effect - yet there was no national anti-war candidate emerging from the mainstream political process for the 1968 Presidential Election.

By July of 1968, once again, there was not a single viable anti-war Presidential candidate - one had been murdered, another dropped out inexplicably from the race, along with an incumbant who had seemed unbeatable a year before - the result was a bloody disgrace at the notorious 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, a scrappy and divisive 3-way election that came close to being thrown into the House of the Representatives and the spectacle of Richard Milhous Nixon sleazing his way into the White House via the back door.

But who was Senator Eugene McCarthy - and how do we account for his strange, insurgent canpaign between October and July?

Well, according to Who's Who in the CIA, published by the East German Stasi, we find ourselves a very unsavory answer....

McCarthy ran as an anti-war candidate - but at the same time, he owned a controlling interest in the company that manufactured the Mach-10 machine pistol.

"Get Clean for Gene": The acceptable, controlled borgoise face of the anti-war movement - true radicals and long-hairs like Abbie Hoffman and the Berkley movement were excluded and marginalised, and an entire generation learnt how to cut it's hair and conform.
